Pricing Plans & Usage Billing

FAQ 7 min read Beginner

Upsell Sales Boost has moved to a new 4-tier pricing model: Free, Starter, Growth, and Pro. Paid plans keep a flat monthly fee and add a usage charge based on Upsell Campaign-driven sales — so your bill grows only when your campaigns actually generate sales, and never beyond a fixed monthly ceiling.

This article explains how the new plans work, what gets measured, and what to expect on your bill.

The overage rate is 1.5% on all paid tiers. What differs between tiers is the included allowance, the monthly cap on usage charges, the number of active campaigns, and access to advanced targeting.

What is Attributed Revenue?

Attributed revenue is the value of sales your Upsell Campaigns generated. This is specific to orders where a discount from one of your Upsell Campaigns was applied at checkout. This is the only thing that counts toward your plan’s usage allowance.

What counts:

  • Orders where an Upsell Campaign discount (Bundle, BOGO, Volume, etc.) was applied at checkout.

What does NOT count:

  • Regular orders with no Upsell Campaigns discount applied.
  • Sales from Boost Campaigns (countdown timers, trust badges, stock counters, etc.). These do not generate attributed revenue, regardless of how much your store sells.
  • Shopify test orders.

So if you’re only running Boost Campaigns and no Upsell Campaigns, your attributed revenue will always be $0 and you’ll never have a usage charge.

How Usage Billing Works

The formula (per billing cycle):

Usage charge = 1.5% × (attributed revenue − included allowance)
= $0 if attributed revenue is at or below the included allowance
= capped at the plan's monthly maximum

The usage charge is billed once at the end of each billing cycle, separate from your flat monthly fee.

Here is how that works out in practice on each plan.

Growth plan — $29.99 monthly fee, $2,000 included, $150 cap:

Attributed revenueUsage chargeTotal bill
$1,500$0 (under allowance)$29.99
$2,000$0 (exactly at allowance)$29.99
$5,0001.5% × $3,000 = $45.00$74.99
$10,0001.5% × $8,000 = $120.00$149.99
$12,000+$150.00 (cap reached)$179.99

Starter plan — $9.99 monthly fee, $500 included, $50 cap:

Attributed revenueUsage chargeTotal bill
$300$0$9.99
$1,0001.5% × $500 = $7.50$17.49
$3,834+$50.00 (cap reached)$59.99

Pro plan — $79.99 monthly fee, $5,000 included, $300 cap:

Attributed revenueUsage chargeTotal bill
$4,000$0$79.99
$10,0001.5% × $5,000 = $75.00$154.99
$25,000+$300.00 (cap reached)$379.99

Free plan — no usage charge ever. Once campaigns generate $200 in total lifetime sales, they pause. Your bill is always $0.

The Billing Cycle

A billing cycle is your ~30-day Shopify subscription period.

  • Paid tiers reset every cycle. Your included allowance refreshes and the usage tally starts at $0 again each new cycle.
  • The flat monthly fee is charged at the start of each cycle; the usage charge is tallied during the cycle and billed at the end.
  • Each cycle’s usage is independent — it doesn’t carry over to the next cycle.
  • Free does not reset — see the section below.

The Free Plan and the $200 Lifetime Cap

This is the most important thing to understand about the Free plan: the $200 allowance is a lifetime total, not a monthly amount.

  • Free includes $200 of Upsell Campaign-driven sales in total, for the lifetime of your store on Free — not $200 per month.
  • Free has no usage charge. It never bills you money.
  • Once your campaigns have generated $200 in attributed revenue total, your Upsell Campaigns are paused (after a 48-hour grace period). You’re never charged for going over — campaigns simply stop.
  • The $200 lifetime counter never resets, including when a new month starts or when you uninstall and reinstall the app.
  • The only way to keep campaigns running past $200 is to upgrade to a paid plan. Upgrading immediately lifts the pause, and your campaigns resume.

In plain terms: “The Free plan includes $200 of campaign-driven sales in total. Once your campaigns have generated $200 in sales, they’ll pause. To keep them running, upgrade to a paid plan. Reinstalling the app won’t reset this — the $200 is a lifetime allowance.”

Usage Alerts, Grace Period, and Suspension

In-App Alerts

As your store approaches its plan’s limit, a usage banner appears at the top of the app’s Dashboard:

  • At 80% or more of your limit: “You’ve used X% of your plan’s revenue limit.”
  • Usage started (once you pass the included allowance): “You’ve started incurring usage charges.”
  • Limit reached (100%): Campaigns are headed toward suspension.

For example, this is the banner a store on the Growth plan sees once it passes its included $2,000 of attributed revenue for the cycle:

In-app banner titled 'You've started incurring usage charges', explaining that the store has passed its plan's included $2,000 of attributed revenue this cycle, so additional revenue is billed as usage, capped per the plan.

Grace Period (48 hours)

When a store reaches 100% of its plan’s limit, it enters a 48-hour grace period. During this window, your campaigns keep running and discounts still apply at checkout — giving you time to upgrade before anything stops.

Suspension

If your store is still over its limit after 48 hours, it is suspended:

  • Your Upsell Campaigns are paused and their checkout discounts stop applying.
  • Your recurring monthly fee continues — suspension is not cancellation.
  • Your Boost Campaigns keep running (timers, badges, stock counters are not affected).

How to Resume

Suspension does not automatically clear at the start of your next billing month. To resume your campaigns, you need to upgrade to a higher plan. Once you do, your previously-active campaigns reactivate immediately and a fresh billing cycle begins.

Free Trials on Paid Plans

Starter, Growth, and Pro each offer a 7-day free trial. During the trial:

  • The flat monthly fee is deferred for 7 days — Shopify won’t charge the subscription fee until the trial ends.
  • Usage charges still apply during the trial. If your campaigns exceed your included allowance while in trial, the 1.5% usage charge is billed. Only the flat fee is deferred, not usage charges.
  • The trial is a one-time budget per store — uninstalling and reinstalling does not grant a fresh trial. Remaining trial days carry over to the next paid plan if you upgrade.

Changing Your Plan

Upgrading Mid-Cycle

When you upgrade from a lower plan to a higher one:

  • Any usage charge you’ve already run up on your current plan is settled.
  • Your old cycle closes and a fresh cycle begins on the new plan with a fresh allowance.
  • Campaigns resume immediately if your store was suspended.

Downgrading

When you downgrade to a lower paid plan:

  • Any usage charge you’ve already incurred on your current (higher) plan is billed at the moment of the downgrade.
  • You then start a fresh cycle on the lower plan with the lower allowance and cap going forward.

Downgrading does not erase usage you’ve already earned. You cannot avoid an accrued usage charge by downgrading right before your cycle ends.

Downgrading to Free

  • Your accrued usage charge on the paid plan is settled first.
  • You then move to Free. If your store has already used its $200 lifetime Free allowance (e.g., from a previous time on Free), it does not get a fresh $200 — campaigns will stay paused until you upgrade to a paid plan.

Campaign Limits on Downgrade

If you downgrade to a plan with a lower active campaign limit (e.g., to Free which allows 1, or Starter which allows 5), the lowest-priority excess campaigns are automatically paused to fit the new limit. You can then manually choose which campaigns to keep active.

Advanced Targeting on Downgrade

Downgrading to Free or Starter (which do not include advanced targeting) will remove country, customer, and scheduling targeting from your campaigns. The product selection of your campaigns is kept. Upgrading to Growth or Pro restores the ability to set targeting again.

Existing Customers (Grandfathered Plans)

If you’re on one of our previous plans, nothing changes for you.

  • Your plan, price, and features stay exactly the same.
  • The new usage-based billing does not apply to you.
  • You are never metered, throttled, or suspended based on campaign-driven revenue.
  • You can stay on your current plan for as long as you like.

If you ever choose to switch to one of the new plans, you’re welcome to — but please note this is a one-way move: once you switch to a new tier, you cannot return to your previous plan.

When you downgrade to a plan that locks a feature, that feature is turned off on your campaigns. Upgrading re-enables it (you’ll re-configure it from there).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was I charged more than my plan’s monthly price?

Your plan includes a monthly allowance of campaign-driven sales. Once your Upsell Campaigns generated more than that allowance, a usage charge of 1.5% of the excess is applied (up to your plan’s monthly cap). The extra on your bill is that usage charge. It resets each billing cycle.

What exactly counts toward my usage?

Only sales generated by your Upsell Campaigns — orders where a discount from one of your Upsell Campaigns was applied at checkout. Regular orders without an Upsell Campaign discount don’t count, and Boost Campaigns (timers, badges, stock counters) never count.

My store sells a lot but my usage is $0. Why?

You’re likely running only Boost Campaigns (widgets), not Upsell Campaigns (discount-driven). Boosts don’t generate attributed revenue, so they never create a usage charge. Only campaign-discounted sales are metered.

I downgraded my plan. Why was I still charged a usage fee?

Usage you’d already run up on your previous plan is settled when you change plans. Downgrading doesn’t erase usage you already incurred, and it only lowers your allowance and cap going forward.

My campaigns suddenly stopped working / discounts aren’t applying. Why?

Your store likely reached its plan’s usage limit. After a 48-hour grace period, campaigns are paused and their discounts stop. To resume, upgrade to a higher plan. Your previously-active campaigns reactivate immediately. Suspension does not clear on its own at the next billing month; upgrading is what brings campaigns back.

(Free Plan) My free campaigns stopped and I was never charged. What happened?

The Free plan includes $200 of campaign-driven sales in total (lifetime). Once your campaigns generate $200 in sales, they pause after a 48-hour grace period. Free is never charged — to keep campaigns running, upgrade to a paid plan.

(Free Plan) I reinstalled the app and my $200 didn’t reset. Is that a bug?

No. The $200 allowance is a lifetime allowance, so it doesn’t reset on reinstall or at the start of a new month. To continue past $200, upgrade to a paid plan.

Does the 7-day free trial mean I won’t be charged anything for 7 days?

The trial waives the flat monthly fee for 7 days. Usage charges still apply during the trial. If your campaigns exceed your plan’s included allowance during the trial, the 1.5% usage charge is billed. Only the subscription fee is deferred.

I’m on an older plan. Does any of this affect me?

No. If you’re on one of our previous plans, nothing changes — your plan, price, and features stay the same, and usage-based billing does not apply to you. You can stay on your current plan as long as you like.

Will I get an email when I’m close to my limit?

Usage alerts are shown in the USB app Dashboard once you pass 80% of your limit. We don’t currently send usage warning emails, so check the app to monitor your usage status.

How is my usage measured if my store isn’t in USD?

Each campaign-driven order is converted to USD at the exchange rate when the order is placed, and that USD value counts toward your (USD) allowance.

What’s the most I can be charged in a month?

Your flat fee plus your plan’s usage cap: Starter up to $59.99, Growth up to $179.99, Pro up to $379.99. You’re never charged more than that in a cycle.
